“ROYALTY – The Jewels”
Designed by Elwin “Stinky” Johnson
The splendor of the French monarchy prevailed for many centuries and proved beneficial to French society as a whole. The decline of French Royalty can easily be attributed to the success of the society and the inability of the Monarchy to keep abreast of the changing times.
France, once considered Europe’s leading power, reached it’s zenith under
the sun King, Louis XVI with the building of the court of Versailles. Thousands of courtiers focused attention on his every activity from morning to night. The nation’s best and brightest intellectuals and artists were enlisted to enhance Louis’s glory in historical writing, music, poetry, art and architecture, all of which flourished under his reign. So brilliantly did Versailles shine that knowledge of French culture and language became common among elites across Europe.
The Versailles court was only one pillar of French aristocratic social life. Another was Paris, where aristocrats mixed more freely with middle-class intellectuals and socialites in informal, private gatherings, called salons, which prominent women held in their homes (hence beauty shops).
Under Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette, the court continued to prosper and all things French was being copied by the rest of “civilized” Europe.
Given the ornate nature of French Royalty fashion during the period preceding the French Revolution in the 18th Century, this being Trinidad Carnival in the 21st Century, “D KREWE” decided to use an element, as the theme for our portrayal of “Royalty – The Jewels”.
We decided to present an abstract portrayal of the jewels in the Royal Crown. The Crown was made up of Rubies, Red Sapphires, Blue Sapphires and Diamonds, mounted on Gold and Silver. Our presentation therefore captures precious gems in the royal Crown.
In 2005, D'Krewe joined with Roland St. George,
who has been producing King Costumes for 30
years. This amalgamation produced the enhanced
section, Arenales, in Trini Revellers "Conquest of
the Indies", which won the 2005 Large Band of the Year Award.
For 2007, we will be D’Krewe of Royalty in Trini Revellers’ French Revolution. Over the years all our masqueraders have been provided with free drinks on Carnival Tuesday. We continued that tradition in 2005 and also provided food on Carnival Tuesday. In 2006 we are expanding our service level with free drinks on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks on Carnival Tuesday. We are also providing a cool-down bus and massuer on Carnival Tuesday. We provide a new experience in quality, efficiency, service and costuming for Carnival.
